Transmissible human proteopathies: an expanding field

Prions are considered the prototype of transmissible proteopathies, and this property has for many decades been unique. More recently transmissibility other misfolded proteins, notably Aβ, tau synuclein, recognized. Initially, transmission these proteins was shown experimentally but relevance humans debated. The co-transmission Aβ with prions through medical procedures involving preparations derived from cadaveric human tissues, such as growth hormone treatment, dura mater transplants or use neurosurgical instruments carrying traces protein fundamentally changed opinion in field. In article, we will summarize key features most common neurodegenerative diseases misfolding their established potential role disease transmission.
